So I wanted to do a detailed post on the 2013 SONA red carpet today, featuring all the cool and interesting outfits our politicians wore to the address. Sadly there were really only two dresses that I loved (one of which I had a tiny hand in) and a smattering of ones that interested me. So this is a shorter post than I intended. Let's start with Lindiwe Mazibuko. I may not vote for her, but I absolutely adore the woman. She is SUCH good value — super smart, funny, witty, engaging, relevant and committed. Everything you want in a political leader and friend really. Every now and again I trade fashion advice for a laugh and a chance to hang out. One of these times was at the Stefania Moreland store in Kloof Street, where I watched this creation being fitted. The delicate black lace beaded crop top could not be more on-trend. And pretty. This is a reflection of Lindiwe's incredibly feminine side. And the one which loves playful fashion. The skirt is fuller than I would like it, but Lindiwe loved it and it made her happy. Not as happy as the glittery gold heels did, mind you. We all LOVED those.

And a Missibaba bag says a lot about the support that this politician has for the local fashion industry. You may carp and snipe about why we care what our political leaders wear, but when they support a desperately young local industry — one that could employ thousands — I can completely get behind it. And she looked great.

Also looking amazing to me was Magdalene Moonsamy from the ANC Youth League. Dressed in head to foot brown and cream polka dots, I loved this 50s style outfit to which she committed whole heartedly. In fact it makes me think I may keep an eye on this one. And maybe the ANCYL is about more than its erstwhile leader. Amazing what an outfit can do to my thinking...

Kgalema Motlanthe's partner looked good, if not great. I am used her looking wonderful, so I was a smidge disappointed with this look, even though there is nothing wrong with it and I love the colour. Singer Chomee was relatively stylishly dressed, with a hint of animal print, although it is not to my taste, if I am honest.

In fact the only attendee that really surprised me was Mayor of Cape Town, Patricia de Lille. Of course she was in trousers, as is her wont. But that deep blue tunic top was made for the occasion by my friends KLuK CGDT, and suited her style perfectly. It may not be a snazzy frock, but it is very HER. And I love her. So there.
