MBFWJ Review: KLuKCGDT
The highlight of many a fashion week in South Africa is the show by KLuKCGDT. Usually we have to wait a few days for it, but this season at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Joburg, we got our dose right up front. And what a lovely, delicious dollop of style we got. Set in Spain, this collection had glamour, drama, flippancy, ethereal beauty and drop dead desire all woven in through the various looks and chapters of the story. This season's KLuKCGDT woman is all these things and more.
There was an unfortunate power outage early in the show that threw things off kilter a bit. In fact, whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the show in the moment, I enjoyed it even more this morning when I went through the photos and saw so much more detail and elegance and beautiful, beautiful dresses that would put some of those Oscars red carpet dresses to shame. Without the pesky lights going out.
My personal favourite piece in the collection was a vintage inspired black velvet cape. I really liked the unexpected vintage exploration in this presentation and think that it is an interesting trend nod that makes even an occasion wear very of-the-moment.
I also enjoyed the digital prints early in the show, rendered in silk and utterly glorious in their lightness of touch, anchored only by a slew of contemporary glistening spangle.
This was a masterful collection of elegance and style that is the hallmark of Malcolm Kluk and Christiaan Gabriel du Toit. It is always hard to follow a best-ever show (as was their last one), but their experience, joy of dressing women, and love of all things beautiful shone through in this fall/winter 12 collection and I look forward to picking up that velvet cape in a week or so. Ok boys? Good.
