African Ndebele Style in UK Vogue, May 2012

The mighty photographer Mario Testino shot an amazing fashion editorial for UK Vogue, May 2012 issue based somewhat loosely on the style of the Southern African Ndebele tribe. Called High Plains Drifter, it seems like it was shot somewhere in North Africa, but the style is all down South.
The story was styled by Lucinda Chambers and the model is Carmen Kass, known for being different. Not African mind you, but different.
I can't help but love the story with the high contrast backdrops and over-exaggerated colour combinations. But it does trouble me when the authenticity is totally ignored simply to get a good picture. I wish people, especially wonderful ones like Testino, would take the time to get to know Africa before utilising it to their own nefarious ends. You know?
