Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Africa: Loin Cloth & Ashes
Part Tanzanian, part South African, the collection from Loin Cloth & Ashes at this week's Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Africa, was all fashion. A rejuvenated collaboration from designer Anisa Mpungwe, and radio host Anele Mdoda, was without question a view into how this label is growing up. It was an evolution for sure, but more than that it was an indicator that this brand is not going to rest on their considerable laurels (dressing Solange for the cover of Elle, anyone?)
Much like Ituen Basi, LCA has made it's mark by leveraging traditional African prints and reinterpreting them for a fashion-conscious market. And the ever-pressing question of 'what next' needed to be answered. Well, no problem there it appears.
First of all there was some stripped back white-on-white. In my view most beautifully executed in the white jumpsuit of sophistication that took our collective fashion breaths away. Pow! As Anele would say. There was some wonderful white patterns against white background that was also lovely, mostly in the full, pocketed, skirt interpretation.
Then there were gently feminine coloured prints. Pale pink and pale blue appeared in floral motifs that nodded to the traditional print but were much more grown up and girlie. Big girls fashion. I love that concept. I love it as much as a statement of the development of the collection, the maturity of the designer and the general progress of the customer.
And then there was the dress that will be in my wardrobe just as soon as it can be produced. Before Christmas is the promise. A shirt dress in fluid fabrics to flatter the lady in the dress. A gentle print with a touch of added spangle for fun. A trend piece with no shouting. Just a whisper of loveliness. What girl doesn't love a stylish dress? I can't wait. Thank you ladies. Cap doffed.
