2014 Oscars Red Carpet Best Dressed: In Glittering Paleness
If there was ever a red carpet trend of all-consuming in-your-face-ness, it happened at the 2014 Oscars. With over twenty different women wearing column dresses in pale metallics, embellished with beads, sequin and paillettes. The best of which was undoubtably Kate Hudson in a Versace draped dress with detachable cape. I kid you not. Could there ever be a more perfect combination? Brilliance.
Also — and this is going to read more like a list than a review due to the sheer volume of ladies dressed in this trend — there was Angelina Jolie in divine Elie Saab (NOT BLACK, what?), award winner Cate Blanchett looking stunning in pretty Armani Privé and Sarah Paulson also in an Elie Saab gown.
Jessica Biel went classic in Chanel, Jennifer Garner was flapper-tastic in Oscar de la Renta — although I loved her hair I didn't think this was her best effort — and Naomi Watts wore one of my favourite gowns of the evening in her sleek Calvin Klein beaded column.
Julie Delpy was nominated for best writing at the Oscars this year, and wore this flattering Jenny Packham dress. Kristen Bell was sensational in Roberto Cavalli with that elaborate train. And Blue Valentine's other big star, Sally Hawkins, was gorgeous in Valentino.
The trend continued apace with the host, Ellen de Generes' wife, Portia de Rossi wearing a sensational laser cut and embellished Naeem Khan dress. I thought Calista Flockhart looked the best she ever has in this beautiful Andrew Gn gown, as did Maria Menounos in Johanna Johnson, whose work I am always such a huge fan of. The beading at the waist was inspired.
And then there were the ladies in the trend that I wasn't such a massive fan of. To be fair the fashion att he 2014 Oscars was pretty darn good this year, with very little to get upset about. And frankly, Kristen Chenoweth's cute little pixie cut could have actually made me a believer. But no. This Roberto Cavalli dress is just a hair too Cavalli for my taste. And then there was the Lady Gaga. In Versace of course. And even I can admit that the dress looks pretty awesome on her. But then there was the scarf draped around her neck. And I simply cannot get on board with that. Done.
