Chanel Cruise Collection 2013
Yay! The cruise collections have kicked off. As usual, Chanel outdoes itself with the most lavish setting — this time in the grounds of Versailles palace, amongst the fountains and flowers. Much has been made of trying to liken the collection to what is happening this week in France — with a new leader, Francois Holland, being installed. The fact that he is a socialist is being evoked. The fact that he is anti-austerity was pandered about. And all of this was somehow reflected in this cruise collection.
I am afraid, I just think that it was Kaiser Karl Lagerveld whimsy. Frothy convections that made me think of petit fours and milkshakes.
Karl himself called it 'serious frivolity' in which I am quite sure the seriousness referred to the gravitas of the Chanel brand, the ubiquitous boucle and tweed. And the frivolity referred to the denim and colour shots, the cut offs and costumes. The brothel creeper trainers most of all.
There was a lot of purple of course. Regal and bold. But also splashes of blue, chartreuse and pink.
And Kaiser Karl himself was all changed up in his personal style, wearing checks. On checks. Can you bloody believe it? And the magnificence of Tilda Swinton was there too. Just making everything ok. Wonderful. I am happy. Are you?
