There has been a bit of hoopla surrounding the graduate thesis project of a design student from an Amsterdam university. The student designed these 'Scary Beautiful' front heel shoes that are a commentary on the role fashion plays in the quest for body perfection — and the assumption that heels can't possibly get any higher. It turns out that this fashion commentator student is one Leanie van der Vyver from right here in Cape Town, South Africa.

Of course the attention was drawn and covered in many international papers and blogs due to the likelihood of someone like Lady Gaga actually wearing these shoes — it doesn't seem a step too far considering what she has worn to date. And I guess that the Gaga message is a play on the key argument of the thesis. Smart work local lady. Freaky shoes, but smart work.
