Introducing Alexa Liss: New South African Designer
So far all that the public know about Alexa Liss is that she is the girl that emptied out her cool Indalo bag and gave it to Alek Wek when the international supermodel admired it in Joburg last week. You can read the story here on Jerri's blog. But Alexa is more than just generous. She is also a very talented young designer who will be launching an eco-conscious range of sophisticated women's wear in 2014.
Having won the AFI Frastrack competition earlier this year, Alexa showed her collection at the recent Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Africa 2013. Entitled Future the Forest, it gave us a glimpse into the lush, verdant world of futuristic fashion when it takes care of the environment. Beautifully made pieces in natural fabrics — both expected and unexpected — made up an intelligent collection that married a ladylike elegance with an aggressive urban attitude. Nice.
Personally I was very taken with the wood grain print and think that the dress from this fabric could be a bit of a top seller, if a bit on the expensive side. But as a forever dress, I would be happy to cough up the cash. Especially since it's impact on the environment is mitigated.
I would suggest you all keep an ear open for this young talent. She has something to say and is using fashion to say it. I believe that it is a welcome voice in our market, and one that we should probably heed. If only for a dress.
