Introducing Grace Bol — African Model on the Rise
As you know, here on this blog we support our African models and love it when they start to penetrate the international lists of the world's best models. Currently we watch Candice Swanepoel (SA), Behati Prinsloo (Namibia) and Katryn Kruger (SA). Now we are adding Grace Bol to this list.
Grace is a stunning Sudanese girl, by way of Kansas, who moved to New York in 2009 to pursue a high fashion career in modeling.
Just 22 years old, Grace is represented by Major Models in NYC and walked the Paris shows for the first time in 2011.
There is no doubt that part of her success is due to the likeness she has to supermodel Alek Wek, also from the Sudan.
A tomboy growing up, Grace is more into basketball than pretty clothes, but has spent her life being told that she should model, so she is giving it a go.
With a strong social consciousness, Grace is very determined that if she makes some money doing this modeling thing, she will be sending it 'back home' to help with her huge Sudanese family, rather than spend it on material things.
Grace also wants to bring a fashion industry and aesthetic to Sudan. She is studying a fashion degree in New York whilst modeling and wants to take this knowledge to the Sudan to help build a stronger industry, combining European high fashion with traditional Sundanese style.
Oh and SA readers...she loves Jay Z, but also the music of Lucky Dube. Good girl.
