2014 Golden Globes Red Carpet Best Dressed: In Black and White Surprises

These are no ordinary black and white dresses. It's like the trend has ramped up and has worked its way through all the classic silhouettes so is now pushing things much further. And this makes me very happy. Fash-happy. Take Zoe Saldana on the 2014 Golden Globes red carpet last night in Prabal Gurung. Unexpected and inexplicably it works and is amazing. As is the case with Rashida Jones in Fausto Puglisi, in my view. The crazy palm trees are actually so clever and take a basic white sheath dress and make it cool. It is also one of the rare dresses that looked better on the actress than the look book model. GoT actress Emilia Clarke wore a white floral overlay over a black base — designed by Proenza Schouler. It was also unexpectedly lovely. Such fun!
Of course GG winner, Jennifer Lawrence, wore Dior. And it's definitely not my favourite on her. Nor is she my favourite in black and white. But she looks good. It has an element of unexpectedness to it. And her hair and make up are utterly flawless. So she gets included.
And while Allison Williams is always amazing — this edgy black and white Alexander McQueen is absolutely surprising — she was out-awesomed by her cast mate Zosia Mamet. Zosia chopped her hair into a bob and wore a sleek, elegant and very pretty Reem Acra dress, solidifying her place as the other GIRL to watch in the style stakes. AMAZING. Lady Edith also looked so very surprisingly lovely in black and white. Laura Carmichael wore a Victor + Rolf column dress, keeping it very simple and super-modern. This is a great selection of fashion, frankly. Lots of discoveries and unexpected turns and twists to keep things exciting from some surprising sources. Awesome.
