ELLE US February 2014 Covers: Women in Television
These girls are bad-ass. If you don't love every one of them for some reason, you are lost. They are funny, take-charge, attractive and successful. They are stars of major TV shows. Not the long dramatic kind. No, the short, sharp, leave-you-wanting-more kind. And they can also rock a Tom Ford power suit like Amy Poehler here. Amazing.
Or be cute and adorable like Zooey Deschanel in Valentino. Although she makes a point to talk about how tenacious she is, how she stands up for herself. And the most adorable thing of all — "If there is one thing I would like to graduate from, it's girl on girl hate. I don't believe in it." Neither do I, Zooey.
Allison Williams is in Anthony Vaccarello and looks very high fashion of course — and a bit sexy for a change. She is honest. She is creating a brand, an expectation of who she is on a red carpet, with her specific American high-end style. It is a fully resolved approach that makes us a bit uncomfortable. But we are loving the results.
And then there is the controversy. Mindy Kaling. The sharpest and funniest of them all. In a Theory by Olivier Theyskens suit. Being all vulnerable about how she still grieves every day over her mother's death. And what do the blogs turn this into? Well a discussion on how size-12 Mindy gets cropped while her skinnier sisters get the usual 3/4 length treatment. Ho hum. Every time. Oh, that's not all. Also, she is the only woman of colour and the only one that was rendered in black and white. Well. I can't deny that both these things are true. And it is a rather uncomfortable point. I just wish it hadn't spoilt how much I was enjoying all the covers. Dammit. Now I have to get cross about it too. Sigh.
