Last night I sat at home and watched the 2014 BAFTAs red carpet at a normal time. It's the only serious awards show that takes place in our time zone. What a pleasure! But it was absolutely evident from the first moment that the only major fashion player on that red carpet was our very own African star - newcomer Lupita Nyong'o.

Wearing a jewel green Dior Couture gown with elaborate train, accessorised with the gold metal belt, she just dazzled. This was sensational.

And as if to underline the comparisons, Lupita lost the award for Best Supporting Actress to Jennifer Lawrence — who wasn't there — and who has worn a red version of this dress. Not as successfully as Lupita has here. You win some, you lose some.

And it must be said that Lupita's mother, Dorothy Nyong'o, was also there, also dressed in bold colour blocking. She looks like an elegant and clever lady. Just delightful.
