2012 Costume Institute Gala Trends: Orange, Peplums, Feathers and Backless
Good golly Miss Molly. Tangerine dreams ahoy here at the 2012 Costume Institute Gala. I am not entirely convinced that orange is the colour of class and style, so none of these beautifully dressed ladies have made Best Dressed, but Ginnifer Goodwin's Monique Lhullier comes pretty damn close in my opinion. Love it. Love the shoe combo. Nicely played in this strong trend colour.
Other ladies in orange include Katherine McPhee in Elie Saab with a cute belt (yay), Kristen Wiig wears a pretty and unexpected lace Stella McCartney but gets the shoes wrong — and the face right — and Kristen Bell in Tommy Hilfiger. All very nice.
Less impressive was Eva Mendes in Prada. I am not sure about almost all the Prada dresses (ironic due to the hosting and all) and this is maybe one of the worst. Sorry Eva. The Ryan breakup has done you no good at all. Emma Roberts was pretty enough but not dazzling in her light orange Escada dress, and Kirsten Dunst was odd but magnificent in her Rodarte. I say odd as this 40s look was totally inappropriate for the Met Gala. Magnificent because I would die for that suit. Die. Love it and love her for wearing it.
You have of course seen a million women wearing peplums this year. It is about the biggest trend. Sofia Vergara (in Marchesa) and Amy Poehler (in Fotini) were both looking good in this style, which is particularly flattering for less than perfect figures. Also in peplums were Elizabeth Banks, Solange and many more. All good. Well done.
Another major trend from the Met Gala last night was backless. High, high necklines and scooped out backs. I am not a fan of this trend. In fact I think that it is a bit silly. But in the quest to be different and find new things to do, it is currently en vogue. Perfect for girls with no boobs, this trend plays on the back as the new sexy. I don't think Cameron Diaz pulls it off at all — looking a bit matronly in her Stella McCartney. And the Something About Mary hair doesn't help. Karolina Kurkova in Rachel Zoe did it MUCH better. The turban should have been a full shebang rather than just the headband. But otherwise it is pretty hot. Good for her. If they all looked like this, maybe I could get on board.
Instead Rosie Huntington Whiteley just looks a bit blah in her Burberry. And while Renee Zellweger shocked us all by wearing Emilio Pucci rather than Carolina Herrera, She didn't far much better on the meh scale. Rihanna channeled a crocodile with black witchy tallons and didn't look terrible. Which is about as nice a thing I can say about her right now. And I quite like the talons. And Tom Ford.
So, aside from all the feathers, there you have it. Peplums, backless and tangerine. The key trends from the 2012 Costume Institute Gala red carpet, thereby concluding our coverage for this year. Good night.
