There are a few notable things about Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, appearing on Friday afternoon at the start of an ultra marathon in Anglesey, Wales. First of all, she wasn't supposed to be there as she is still on maternity leave, five weeks after the birth of Prince George. But she fancied having a day out and saying thank you to her neighbours of the past couple of years. So she did. Good girl. It was huge as this is the first official real-life sighting of the K-Middy since the birth.

Second, everything that she wore, was a recycled item. The Paige jeans made another appearance — having first been spotted on the trip of Canada in 2011. The jacket is a favourite by Ralph Lauren that has been worn many times since 2010. The top is by Zara and was first worn in Switzerland earlier this year. And those dastardly Pied a Terre wedges have been annoying me since before the wedding.
Thirdly, we must acknowledge how good Kate is at the whole high-low thing, mixing Ralph Lauren with Zara without batting an eyelid. And making it work particularly well in her modern-countryside vibes that she has been pioneering.

Fourthly we can mention that her hair wasn't blow dried by her standard hair people. It was all natural and wavy and a bit frizzy and flowing. And, my goodness me, she was all the more attractive for it. There is something quite personal and intimate about seeing her all relaxed and dressed-down and natural. It is, as I imagine, her husband and family see her. This is the real version of her, not the glossy one we see on official engagements. And we love it.

And finally, let's just take a moment to acknowledge that, while she is straight back into her skinny jeans, nothing fits her like it did. And this is perfectly normal. Her jacket isn't all smugly buttoned up, nipped in around her waist as she always wore it before. And things are all just a tiny bit messy. And how we love her for this. Instead of hiding away until she is has starved herself back into her pre-pregnancy shape, she is out, looking fabulously pretty and stylish, in her new way.

What a pleasure it is to see such lovely, down-to-earth people in the public eye. Having fun. Giving back. Enjoying themselves despite lack of sleep and a new baby. Fabulous.
